What Abnormal Hemogram Results Can Point To

A hemogram does not hand over a diagnosis in one line. It narrows the field.

Low hemoglobin and low hematocrit point toward anemia, yet the cause could be iron deficiency, low vitamin B12, low folate, kidney disease, recent bleeding, long-term inflammation, or a bone marrow disorder. The MCV then helps sort the list. Small red cells push iron deficiency higher. Large red cells push B12 and folate issues higher.

High white cells may turn up with infection, steroid use, smoking, physical stress, or blood cancers. Low white cells can happen after viral illness, with some medicines, or with marrow disease. What The Test Feels Like And How To Prepare

A hemogram is done with a standard blood draw, usually from a vein in the arm. Most people do not need fasting unless another test drawn at the same time calls for it. Water is usually fine, and staying well hydrated can make the draw easier.
